Burcht of Oostvoorne - Monument
The Burcht of Oostvoorne, also known as the Jacobaburcht or Burcht van Voorne, is an atmospheric medieval castle ruin in the old centre of Oostvoorne. The ruins lie on a moated, artificially raised mound and are a special example of a Dutch motte castle.
What can you expect at the Burcht of Oostvoorne?
- Medieval castle ruins: A wooden bridge leads you to the former castle grounds, where the layout of the residential tower, curtain wall and other buildings is still clearly recognisable.
- Power centre of the Lords of Voorne: The first castle probably dates from the twelfth century and grew into the administrative centre of the influential Lords of Voorne.
- Impressive keep: At its heart once stood a defensible residential tower about ten metres high, with walls almost three metres thick.
- Jacobaburcht: The nickname refers to Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, Countess of Holland, who stayed at the castle for a time in the fifteenth century.
- Open-air ruins full of history: Do not expect a furnished castle, but a quiet historic site where you can walk among old foundations and wall remains. Information panels help you imagine what the castle once looked like.
- Easy to combine: A visit usually takes around twenty to thirty minutes and is easy to combine with a walk through Oostvoorne, the nearby country estates or the dunes of Voorne.
