Historisch Museum Den Briel

The Historisch Museum Den Briel tells the history of the fortified town of Brielle. At its heart is the capture of Den Briel by the Sea Beggars on 1 April 1572, the start of Dutch independence.
What can you expect at the Historisch Museum Den Briel?
- History: The town founded the museum in 1912 as the Trompmuseum, after Brielle-born admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp. It is housed in the former weigh house and town prison of 1623 on the Markt.
- Themes: You move from prehistory through Roman and medieval Brielle to 1 April 1572, the naval heroes and the Second World War. Servants of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Prince Maurice tell the stories.
- Highlights: Highlights of the museum are:
- The late medieval wax writing tablets found in Brielle.
- The 17th century prison cells in the building itself.
- The story and objects of naval hero Maarten Tromp.
